Jamshedpur, Oct 24: One person was killed and four others injured as a truck taken for immersion of idols of Goddess Durga moved in back gear along the Bodhanwala Ghat in Kharkai river under Bistupur Thana area on Tuesday evening.
The tragedy occurred as the volunteers of the Kitadih Durga Puja Samiti were carrying the idols of Goddess Durga down to the river ghat from the truck that suddenly rolled down.
As there was no space for the victims to avert the rolling truck, they came under the heavy vehicle.
One person was fatally injured in the mishap, whereas four others were injured, two of them seriously. All the injured were soon rushed to Tata Main Hospital for treatment.
Though the district administration had deployed police personnel at the ghat in view of the idols’ immersion, it had not made any arrangements for ambulance or crane at the spot. As a result of the absence of proper arrangements, those who fell victim to the mishap had to remain under the truck’s wheels for a prolonged period.
Jamshedpur East legislator Sarayu Roy had rushed to the mishap scene and had ensured prompt rescue of the injured.
The identity of the deceased mishap victim could not be known immediately except that he was a resident of the Bagbera locality.
