Peshawar, July 31: Police said that the number of fatalities from the devastating suicide bombing at a political convention of a hardline Islamist party in Pakistan’s unrest-ridden Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region drastically increased to 54 on Monday as they stepped up their search for those responsible for the enormous attack.
The suicide bombing in Khar, the seat of the Bajaur tribal area, that leftover 100 people injured, according to the police, may have been carried out by the terrorist organisation ISIS, which is banned.
Leaders of the JUI-F party have previously come under attack from the local ISIS section, who view them as apostates.
More than 400 members of the conservative Jamiat Ulema Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) party, which is notorious for its ties to hardline political Islam, had gathered for a meeting beneath a huge tent in the Afghan border town of Khar on Sunday when the incident occurred.
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leads a coalition of parties, one of which is the JUI-F. In preparation for elections coming up in the next months, Pakistani political groups were just starting their campaigning when the massive terror attack took place.
