Dhanbad, Oct 13: A youth from Pakur, identified as Md Murtaza, was killed in an encounter with Chennai Police (Tamil Nadu) while his compatriot Naim Akhtar was arrested on the spot with arms and cash.
The report reaching Pakur police headquarters from Chennai police said that the encounter took place in the Sriperumbudur area under Kanchipuram district, around 40 km away from Chennai, on Tuesday. When police tried to arrest him in connection with a chain snatching case, Murtaza fired on the police. He was gunned down during a counterattack by the police.
A Pakur senior police officer has admitted to have received the information about this incident. Murtaza is a resident of Ranipur village under Muffasil police station of Pakur while the arrested Naim Akhtar is a resident of Aliganj under Sadar police station.
As per the FIR lodged in Kanchipuram police station, Murtaza and Naim had snatched the chain of a woman at the bus stand of Sriperumbudur on Sunday evening and escaped. When people chased them, Murtaza and Naim fired bullets in the air to create panic.
Kanchipuram police on the basis of CCTV footage took the help of a drone and reached their hide-out place. They arrested Naim on Monday morning and recovered arms and heavy cash from his possession. On revelation by Naim, they spotted Murtaza on Tuesday evening and gunned him down in an encounter.
Sriperumbudur police have claimed that Murtaza ran a crime syndicate and was involved in several criminal incidents along with other members.
However, family members of Murtaza have denied Chennai police’s allegations. His mother told the media that her son (Murtaza) had left the village four months ago for a job in a Chennai-based company.
