Daltonganj, May 19: The Palamu police have launched a new motivational move. It has carved an award called ‘Officer of the Month’. This award is to come in the monthly crime meeting every month.
Police sources said the award ‘Officer of the Month’ is the brainchild of SP Chandan Kumar Sinha. Police sources said like all professionals police officers too at times get ‘dispirited’ either because of the piling of cases or for other departmental reasons.
The award ‘Officer of the Month’ is aimed at removing the professional junk and rust in the officers.
The first such award for the Officer of the Month went to Hira Lal Sah, the officer in charge of the Pipratarn police station this Friday in a crime meeting held and chaired by the SP.
Speaking to this correspondent, the SP said “What I had felt and noticed was that officers, especially younger ones were losing passion at times which used to cast adverse effects on their functioning. In order to further gear them up I decided to have this award ‘Officer of the Month’.”
“Do good. Keep consistency in doing good. And what is good for a police officer is very plain and challenging. Maintain law and order. Keep crime under control. Avoid perfunctory investigation. The rest will follow on its own,” said Sinha.
There are around 18 indicators to the police for every month’s review by the SP from burglaries, theft, road hold up road robbery, attempt to murder, murder, anti-Naxal operation, recovery of illicit arms, ammunition and land mines, attempt to rape, rape, rape with murder, kidnapping, kidnapping for ransom, crime against woman and child, prevention of atrocities to SC/ST, extortion, communal violence, gambling, cyber fraud cases etc where every officer in charge of the police station has to prove his mettle or show his action or doing to be noticeable to keep him ahead of the fleet of the various officers in charge of the police stations.
Sinha said, “Sometimes an officer gets a pat for something good done by him and the very next moment the same officer either gets a hard tongue lashing by the SP in the crime meeting, the result of which is the said officer remains in a state of uncertainty and bewilderment. This award of the Officer of the Month is to prepare officers to vie with others to excel in as many indicators or parameters as possible.”
The SP agreed to the correspondent’s pointed query that the entry of the award be made in the service book of the awarded police officers otherwise a gift or good words about the awarded officer will be a forgotten thing in the very next month. The SP said he would try to get it done in the service book’s column of GS (good service) remarks.
Five SDPOs form the jury in Palamu and they will act as adjutants to the screening of the performance of the police officers every month deciding which officer to be crowned with the award ‘Officer of the Month’.
