New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on his visit to Vientiane, Laos, on Thursday, witnessed a traditional performance of Phra Lak Phra Ram, the Laotian adaptation of the Ramayana, staged by the Royal Theatre of Luang Prabang. The performance, also known as Phalak-Phralam, highlights the enduring cultural connection between India and Laos, showcasing the shared heritage of both nations.
In a press release, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasized the significance of the performance, stating, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi witnessed an episode of Lao Ramayana. The Ramayana continues to be celebrated in Laos, reflecting the deep-rooted civilizational ties between the two countries.”
Celebration of Shared Heritage
Indian culture and traditions have been practiced and preserved in Laos for centuries. The collaboration between India and Laos to restore shared heritage sites, such as the Vat Phou temple complex, reflects the strong cultural bond. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has been actively involved in the restoration and conservation efforts at these historical monuments.
In addition to the Ramayana performance, Prime Minister Modi participated in a blessing ceremony by senior Buddhist monks of Laos, marking the shared spiritual connection between the two nations. “Met respected monks and spiritual leaders in Lao PDR, who were happy to see the honour being given to Pali by the Indian people. I am grateful to them for their blessings,” the Prime Minister shared on X.
Exhibition on Restoration Efforts
PM Modi also viewed an exhibition showcasing the ASI’s restoration efforts at the Vat Phou temple complex, highlighting the long-standing collaboration between India and Laos in preserving important cultural and historical sites.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties Through Summits
Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Laos is part of his participation in the 21st ASEAN-India Summit and the 19th East Asia Summit. The trip is an opportunity to review the progress of India’s relations with ASEAN nations under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and to chart the future direction of cooperation.
During the visit, PM Modi is expected to hold several bilateral meetings, discussing key issues of peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. In his departure statement, the Prime Minister said, “The East Asia Summit will provide an opportunity to deliberate on the challenges to peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. We share close cultural and civilisational ties with the region, including with Lao PDR, which are enriched by shared heritage of Buddhism and Ramayana.”
PM Modi’s visit coincides with the tenth anniversary of India’s Act East Policy, which has strengthened India’s engagement with ASEAN countries. The Prime Minister expressed his confidence that the visit would deepen ties with ASEAN and foster greater cooperation between the two nations.
