New Delhi, Oct 20: At Uttar Pradesh’s Sahibabad RapidX station on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the priority section of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) Corridor. This cutting-edge regional mobility solution aims to transform regional connectivity in the nation by building new, world-class transportation infrastructure.

RRTS trains were given the name “RAPIDX” by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) in April. The first semi-high-speed regional rail service project in India is being carried out by NCRTC. With a 180 kmph design speed, the RRTS is a brand-new, high-frequency, semi-high-speed rail-based commuter transportation system.

The Prime Minister also inaugurated the RapidX train, signifying the introduction of the RRTS in India, which will be recognized as ‘Namo Bharat’. This train connects Sahibabad to the Duhai depot and is the first of its kind in the country.

Sahibabad will be connected to the Duhai depot via the 17 km priority part of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS Corridor, which will pass through the stations at Ghaziabad, Guldhar, and Duhai.

The foundation stone for the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor was laid by the Prime Minister on March 8, 2019.

This train service, once operational, will reduce the travel time between Sahibabad and Duhai Depot to just 12 minutes, a significant improvement over the usual 30-35 minutes it takes by road.

The National Capital Region (NCR) has identified eight RRTS corridors that need to be developed. Of these, three corridors—Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Corridor, Delhi-Gurugram-SNB-Alwar Corridor, and Delhi-Panipat Corridor—have been given priority for implementation in Phase I.

With a construction cost of about Rs 30,000 crore, the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS will link Delhi and Meerut in less than an hour, passing via the cities of Ghaziabad, Muradnagar, and Modinagar. The 82-kilometer Delhi-Meerut stretch is probably going to be finished by 2025.
