New Delhi, April 25: PM Modi in Kochi, Kerala launched the country’s first water metro on Tuesday.
The first-of-its-kind Kochi water metro project will increase tourism while offering residents and visitors in and around Kochi safe, inexpensive, and convenient transportation. Eight electric-hybrid boats will launch the water metro’s first phase of service on two routes: High Court to Vypin and Vyttila to Kakkanad. The price for a single ticket on the route from the High Court to Vypin has been set at Rs 20. The cost to travel from Vyttila to Kakkanad is Rs 30.
The battery-operated electric hybrid boats will offer seamless connectivity to thousands of residents, redefining how people commute in this area as the water metro will connect 10 islands near Kochi.
The metro, according to Kerala’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, will significantly revolutionise water transportation and increase tourism in the region. The boats are made by Cochin Shipyard Limited with funding from the government of Kerala and the German company KfW. The project’s complete fleet consists of 78 electric boats and 38 terminals.
