New Delhi, Sept 20: In the midst of a dispute with Canada over the assassination of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June of this year, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday in the new Parliament building.
Jaishankar briefed Prime Minister Modi on the Canada matter, according to sources.
In his Monday address to the Canadian Parliament, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed that Indian agents were responsible for Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s death by gunshot. In June of this year, he died in a targeted shooting in Canada.
Trudeau asserted that Canadian national security authorities had information suggesting that “agents of the Indian government” were responsible for the assassination of Nijjar, who also held the position of president at Surrey’s Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara.
“Canadian security agencies have been actively pursuing credible allegations of a potential link between agents of the Government of India and the killing of a Canadian citizen, Hardeep Singh Nijjar,” Trudeau said.
India responded to Canada’s allegations by calling them “absurd” and “motivated” and urged the Trudeau administration to take action against anti-Indian groups working within its borders.
“We have seen and rejected the statement of the Canadian Prime Minister in their Parliament, as also the statement by their Foreign Minister,” said the MEA in an official statement.
