New Delhi, Oct 2: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed his sincere and heartfelt condolences to US President Joe Biden over the loss of life and devastation caused by Hurricane Ian.

“My sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathies to @POTUS @JoeBiden for the loss of precious lives and devastation caused by Hurricane Ian. Our thoughts are with the people of the United States in these difficult times,” tweeted PM Modi.

At least 66 people died from Ian in Florida alone, and four people died in storm-related incidents in North Carolina, officials said. Ian also knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of people in the Carolinas from Friday through early Saturday, CNN reports.

In Arcadia, West Florida – dozens of miles inland – floodwaters still covered parts of the town like a lake Saturday, making a state highway invisible and swallowing everything but the roof of a gas station.

In heavily damaged Fort Myers, where a storm surge engulfed vehicles and many homes, CNN reported. By Saturday evening, Ian was a post-tropical cyclone that continued to weaken over southern Virginia. The National Hurricane Center said several more inches of rain could fall in parts of West Virginia and western Maryland by Sunday morning.
