PM Modi Receives Nigeria’s Second-Highest National Award

PM Modi Receives Nigeria’s Second-Highest National Award

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been conferred with Nigeria’s second-highest national honour, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), during his visit to Nigeria. Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu presented the award, making PM Modi the second foreign dignitary to receive this distinction after Queen Elizabeth II.

PM Modi, wearing a black Nehru jacket adorned with the GCON badge, expressed his gratitude to the government and people of Nigeria. “Honoured to be conferred with the ‘Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger’ Award by Nigeria. I accept it with great humility and dedicate it to the 140 crore people of India and the friendship of India and Nigeria,” he said.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

PM Modi emphasized the strong foundation of India-Nigeria relations, built on mutual cooperation, goodwill, and respect. “As two vibrant democracies with dynamic economies, we have been working together for the well-being of the people of both countries,” he remarked.

He highlighted the areas of collaboration, including economy, energy, agriculture, security, fintech, small and medium enterprises, and culture. “This award will inspire us to elevate the strategic partnership between India and Nigeria to new heights,” he added.

India’s Commitment to Africa

Recognizing Nigeria’s influential role in Africa, PM Modi reiterated India’s commitment to Africa’s development. “Close cooperation with Africa has been a high priority for India. Together with Nigeria, we will work for the prosperity of our people and the entire African continent,” he stated.

PM Modi further underlined India’s dedication to representing the Global South’s interests, working in close coordination with African nations.

Historic Visit

This is the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Nigeria in 17 years, highlighting the growing importance of the India-Nigeria relationship. PM Modi’s visit marks a significant step in fostering stronger ties between the two nations.
