The consignment of marijuana was loaded in a trailer which has also been seized along with the narcotic stuff,
Those arrested were identified as Waheed Khan, a resident of Bareli in Uttar Pradesh, and Karan Kumar Gupta, a resident of Jharia in Dhanbad district.
Revealing about the breakthrough, the Seraikela-Kharsawan district SP, Bimal Kumar said that they had a tip-off that a huge consignment of marijuana was likely to pass from Chowka towards Ranchi in the midnight.
“Following the information, we set up a special team under the leadership of Chandil SDPO, Sanjay Kumar Singh to detect the smuggling of the narcotic consignment. The team set up a checkpoint at Ichagargh on the way to Ranchi from Chowka. The team checked each and every vehicle that passed through the stretch and ultimately the marijuana consignment was found loaded in a trailer, ” said Kumar while addressing a press conference at Seraikela today.
He stated that the marijuana was stuffed in 27 plastic bags on the trailer, which is generally used to carry iron or any other heavy material.
The SP said there were all three persons in the trailer, including the driver but one of them succeeded in escaping arrest as he fled the scene taking advantage of the darkness.
The senior police officer pointed out that prior to the seizure of the trailer, an SUV had passed the checking point, suspected to have been piloting the trailer.
“We are presently forwarding the two arrested persons to judicial custody, but we will later take the two in police remand for detection of others involved in the smuggling and the modus operandi of the smugglers, ” said Kumar, adding that the operations against the narcotic activities in the district will continue.
