Jamshedpur, July 21: Police on Friday arrested a 25-year-old youth, Ramay Bodra, for bludgeoning a 26-year-old girl to death under the Manoharpur thana area in West Singhbhum on July 17.
The murder victim Amita Tirkey had found a mobile phone lying under a road bridge at Chiria in Manoharpur on July 17 afternoon. A little while after Amita had found the handset, a youth approached her to know whether she had found any mobile phone.
Amita admitted to having found the phone but asked the youth to tell her its number, obviously to get it confirmed if he was the bonafide owner of that phone.
But instead of telling the phone number, the youth tried to snatch it away from Amita’s hand. In the face of such an act by the youth, Amita suspected something wrong and in the spur of the moment, she chewed one of the fingers of the belligerent youth.
Soon after, the youth who had become extremely infurious by the time, hit the girl hard and as she fell down, the youth dragged her near a bush where he bludgeoned the girl to death. Later he dragged the body to the bank of the adjoining Koena river where he dropped it.
The police recovered the body from the river bank on July 18 and started an investigation having registered a case against an unknown. The body was soon identified as that of Amita Tirkey, a resident of Tirkey Tola in Chiria.
During the investigation, two local men came across the police and informed that Ramay Bodra of Timar village in Chiria had been seen while dragging a body towards the Koena river.
On the basis of the information, the police on Friday morning raided a house in Timer village and picked up Ramay. During the subsequent interrogation, the youth confessed to having murdered the girl for his mobile phone.
