Jamshedpur, Oct 9: Police have seized Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) worth over Rs 5,00,000 from a van under the Manoharpur police station area in West Singhbhum district about 180 km away from here late in the evening on Sunday.
Apart from making the liquor seizure, the police confiscated the van and arrested the driver of the vehicle.
The seized consignment of IMFL was of various popular brands and packed in 56 cartons.
According to police, the Manoharpur police were carrying out a vehicle-checking drive near the St Augustine College along the Koel River on Manoharpur-Anandpur road late last evening when the cops saw a van stopping at a little distance away at the sight of the ongoing checking drive.
As the vehicle stopped without any apparent reason, the police suspected some foul and went over to the vehicle. On checking the van, the police team found the van was filled with various brands of liquor cartons.
The police had subsequently picked up the driver who was later identified as Mithun Pramanik, a resident of Bodam in East Singhbhum.
The Manoharpur police today held a press conference and displayed the seized liquor before sending the driver to Chaibasa divisional jail.
The OC, Manoharpur said that the seized liquor was apparently genuine stuff but still samples of the seized liquor will be sent to a Ranchi lab for chemical examination.
The police officer said they got the cost of the seized liquor estimated through the Jharkhand Excise department and it was found to be worth over Rs 5 lakhs.
