New Delhi, May 25: Praveen Sood, a former DGP for Karnataka, assumed leadership as the CBI’s new director on Thursday (May 25), according to sources.

Sood, an IPS officer from the 1986 batch, was named CBI Director on Sunday (May 14) for a two-year term.

Subodh Jaiswal, whose term as CBI Director expired on May 25, was succeeded by Sood.

In a meeting attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, and Leader of the Opposition Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Praveen Sood’s name was reportedly finalised for the role of CBI director.

In 2013–14, Praveen Sood was appointed Managing Director of the Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation. Additionally, he held positions as the Principal Secretary in the State Home Department, the ADGP of the Karnataka State Reserve Police, and the ADGP in Administration.

Praveen Sood was accused of favouring the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state of Karnataka before the March assembly election by Congress leader DK Shivakumar. He had claimed that while Sood was in charge of the Karnataka Police, around 25 cases were brought against Congress leaders while none were brought against BJP leaders.
