Oct.6: Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi offered his condolences to the families of the farmers slain in the Lakhimpur Kheri event on Sunday, and declared a 50-lakh ex-gratia for the deceased’s relatives, including journalist Raman Kashyap.
“On the behalf of the Punjab government, I announce ?50 lakh each to the families of the deceased including the journalist,” Channi told ANI on Wednesday.
Bhupesh Baghel, Congress leader and chief minister of Chhattisgarh, also promised a 50 lakh ex-gratia for the deceased’s kin. The Uttar Pradesh government, which has been chastised by the opposition for its handling of the tragedy, had already pledged a 45 lakh ex-gratia and a government job for the families of the four farmers murdered in the violence.

Both Channi and Baghel are currently in Lucknow, following Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to Lakhimpur Kheri for an official visit. Senior party officials KC Venugopal and Randeep Surjewala are scheduled to accompany Gandhi to the scene of the violence.
