New Delhi, Oct.29: P V Sindhu, the two-time Olympic medalist from India, advanced to the quarterfinals of the French Open badminton event with a straight-game victory over Denmark’s Line Christophersen in the women’s singles second round.
Sindhu, who was seeded third, defeated Christophersen, who was rated 24th in the world, in 37 minutes late Thursday night. She got off to a good start in the match, winning the first game 21-19 following a hard-fought struggle. In the second game, the Indian shuttler smashed Christophersen 21-9 to seal the victory.
On Friday, the incumbent world champion will meet Thailand’s eighth seed Busanan Ongbamrungphan in the quarterfinals.
Last week, Sindhu defeated Busanan in the Denmark Open.
Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, seeded fifth in men’s doubles, advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila 15-21 21-10 21-19 in an all-Indian match.
Next up will be Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik of Malaysia, who are seeded fourth.
Men’s singles player Sourabh Verma, on the other hand, was eliminated in the second round after losing 12-21 9-21 against Kenta Nishimoto of Japan.
With a facile win over Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew on Thursday, rookie Lakshya Sen glided into the third round of the Super 750 event.
