Dhanbad, June 10: Dr Jyoti Ranjan Prasad, the Principal of Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH) Dhanbad, called an emergency meeting of the Anti-Ragging Committee today in response to a complaint from a 1st MBBS professional students alleging ragging by four senior students (2019-20 batch) of the institution.

The college authorities swung into action after Jharkhand police on the basis of an ‘online complaint of students’ asked to submit a report within 24 hours after proper investigation.

The principal admitted to media persons that junior students have levelled charges of ragging on four named senior MBBS students.

“The students were interrogated about the allegation. The Anti-Ragging Committee will sit today to take further action,” said the principal.

Notably, sources said that junior and senior students denied having any information about such a ragging incident on the campus.

According to sources, the medical college said that the student lodged the complaint in Anti-Ragging Helpline Cell about ragging in SNMMCH on Tuesday evening. The Jharkhand police while lodging the online complaint informed the medical college authority and sought a report within 24 hours.

The principal held a meeting of the Anti-Ragging Committee on Thursday in his chamber and discussed the matter. The junior students who lodged the complaint and seniors on whom the allegation was levelled were also called for an inquiry.

As per the complaint, the seniors used to call the juniors late at night and abuse them using filthy words. They also put pressure on shaving hair, moustache and beard which is attached to religious sentiments.

This is the second ragging allegation incident in SNMMCH in three years.

Earlier, in 2018, an online ragging complaint was lodged by a person from New Delhi. The then principal Dr Shailendra Kumar conducted a proper probe of the allegation but no student came forward to accept the claim of lodging a complaint.
