New Delhi: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has retained his position in Parliament’s Standing Committee on Defence, while actor-politician and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has been assigned to the Information Technology (IT) Committee, according to a notification issued by the Rajya Sabha Secretariat on Thursday.

Mr Gandhi, who serves as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, was a member of the Defence Committee in the previous Lok Sabha as well. The Defence Committee will be chaired by BJP MP Radha Mohan Singh.

Kangana Ranaut’s Debut in IT Committee

Kangana Ranaut, who is a first-time parliamentarian from the BJP, will now be a part of the Communications and IT Committee, which oversees matters related to the Information Technology Ministry. The committee includes other prominent members like Samajwadi Party’s Jaya Bachchan, Trinamool Congress’ Mahua Moitra, and Shiv Sena’s Priyanka Chaturvedi.

Key Committee Leadership Assignments

While the BJP leads several crucial committees, the Congress has been assigned the leadership of four major ones, including External Affairs, which will be chaired by former Foreign Minister Shashi Tharoor. Additionally, senior Congress members will helm committees on Education, Agriculture, and Rural Development.

Committee Composition

Each department-related standing committee is made up of members from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, providing oversight on the functioning of various ministries. These committees act as ‘mini parliaments’ and play a key role in ensuring accountability within their respective domains.
