New Delhi, April 2: Rahul Gandhi will appeal his conviction and sentence tomorrow before the Surat sessions court,  according to reports. In his appeal, the former president of the Congress requested that the sessions court vacate the magistrate’s decision finding him guilty of slander. Moreover, he requested a temporary stay of the conviction while the dispute was resolved.

Notably, Rahul Gandhi was recently expelled from the Parliament after receiving a two-year prison term in connection with a defamation case from 2019

Rahul Gandhi was given bail, and the Lok Sabha secretariat immediately delayed his sentence after 30 days to allow him to appeal the ruling. Leaders of the opposition questioned the “bullet train” pace at which the measures against him were implemented.

A special poll for the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat would be announced by the Election Commission unless a higher court decides to halt Gandhi’s conviction. Also, he will be prohibited from running in elections for the following eight years.

Purnesh Modi, a former Gujarat minister and member of the BJP, brought the defamation lawsuit against Gandhi for his comment, “How come all thieves share the common surname Modi?”

Before to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the former Wayanad MP for the Lok Sabha made the comments while speaking at a rally in Karnataka. He was criticising PM Modi for having the same last name as the wanted businessmen Nirav and Lalit Modi.
