New Delhi: Congress leader and Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi made an unannounced visit to AIIMS Delhi late Thursday night. He interacted with patients and their families who were braving the freezing cold, living on streets, footpaths, and subways while awaiting treatment. Gandhi expressed his concerns on Instagram, stating, “The burden of illness, the biting cold, and government apathy—this is what I witnessed while meeting patients and their families outside AIIMS.”
Forced to Sleep on Streets Amidst Harsh Conditions
Gandhi criticized both the Centre and the Delhi government for their failure to address the dire conditions faced by patients. He said, “These people are forced to sleep on streets, footpaths, and subways, clinging to a faint hope amidst the cold ground, hunger, and lack of basic facilities.” The Congress leader accused the governments of insensitivity and neglect towards their responsibilities.
Congress Shares Visuals of the Visit
The Congress party shared pictures of Gandhi’s interaction with the affected families on X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing the gravity of the situation. The post read, “Rahul Gandhi met patients and their families outside AIIMS who have come from far-off places seeking treatment but are left to fend for themselves on streets by the Modi government and Delhi government.”
Months of Waiting and Government Apathy
Another post by Congress highlighted the challenges faced by patients and families, stating, “Months-long waits for treatment, severe inconvenience, and government insensitivity—this is the harsh reality of AIIMS Delhi. People from remote areas, bearing the burden of their loved ones’ illnesses, are forced to sleep on footpaths and subways amidst the freezing cold.”
