New Delhi, April 8: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s trip to the Kolar region of Karnataka has been postponed a second time. According to state Congress head DK Shivakumar, candidates would be busy submitting their nominations and it would be too early for him to leave tomorrow.
His new arrival time was set for tomorrow in the BJP-ruled state’s important mining region. April 5 was the early arrival date. Now, reports claim that Gandhi would visit Kolar on April 16.
The “Modi surname” remark that Gandhi made in April 2019, right before the presidential election, and which ultimately resulted in his conviction in a criminal defamation case brought by a BJP leader in Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state, was made in the same district of Kolar.
The two main faces of the party in Karnataka are Shivakumar and his partymate Siddaramaiah. Though both parties have denied any breach, there has been conjecture that there is uneasiness between them about who will serve as chief minister if Congress wins the election.
The second list of candidates has already been released by the Congress. The BJP is gathering in Delhi today to decide on its candidates; according to the news agency PTI, the BJP is said to have picked three candidates from each Karnataka constituency.
Some of the Congress’ supporters and potential ticket members voiced their displeasure when their names were not included in the second list of candidates.
Notably, Karnataka has 224 assembly seats for which voting will take place on May 10. The counting of votes will be done on May 13.
