Raipur, Dec.30: The Raipur Police have detained Kalicharan Maharaj for disparaging Mahatma Gandhi and praising Nathuram Godse for assassinating the nation’s father. He was arrested  from Madhya Pradesh’s Khajuraho.

“Kalicharan Maharaj was staying in a rented accommodation near Bageshwar Dham, 25 km from Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh. Raipur Police arrested him at 4 am today. By late evening, the police team will reach Raipur with the accused,” SP Raipur Prashant Agarwal said.

On the allegation of former Raipur mayor Pramod Dubey, a FIR was filed against Kalicharan Maharaj at Tikrapara police station in Raipur.

Kalicharan has been booked under sections 505(2) [Statements creating or promoting enmity, hatred or ill will between classes] and section 294 [obscene act in any public place] of the IPC.

Kalicharan Maharaj claimed on Sunday at the Dharam Sansad held at Ravan Bhata venue in Raipur that “the purpose of Islam is to seize the nation through politics.”

He also said, “I salute Nathuram Godse that he killed Gandhi.”

Kalicharan Maharaj’s remark at Raipur’s ‘Dharam Sansad’ occurred just days after a religious gathering in Haridwar made news for aggressive and divisive speeches made by Hindu religious leaders during the occasion against minority communities.

Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel on the arrest said, “Kalicharan Maharaj’s family and lawyer have been informed about his arrest by Chhattisgarh police. He will be presented before the court within 24 hours time.”

“Narottam Mishra (Madhya Pradesh Home Minister & BJP leader) should tell whether he is happy or sad about the arrest of the person who derogated Mahatma Gandhi? No rules have been violated and arrest made by Chhattisgarh police as per procedures,” he remarked.
