Mumbai, Oct 17: Raj Thackeray, the leader of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), congratulated Devendra Fadnavis for the BJP’s decision to not run any candidates in the Mumbai’s Andheri (East) byelection.

Ramesh Latke, the incumbent MLA, passed away on May 11 as a result of a heart attack he experienced while on holiday in Dubai with his family.

“Thank you Devendra Fadnavis and senior party leaders for deciding not to field a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate in the Andheri (East) by-election. Our opinion is that political parties should compete fairly on their issues on a political platform with a good political culture!” Thackeray wrote.

Murji Ptel, the Maharashtra BJP candidate running against Rutuja Latke of the Shiv Sena, has withdrawn, according to a statement made earlier today by Chandrashekhar Bawankule, the party’s president.

“The BJP has decided not to contest the Andheri East bypoll. Murji Patel, who had filed the nomination from the BJP, will now withdraw it. We could otherwise have won the election,” Bawankule said in Nagpur.

Upset BJP members yelled insults at the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and the party (MNS). The MNS leader had already asked the BJP not to run a candidate in the by-elections.

Notably, Thackeray had on Sunday written another letter to Fadnavis, asking the ruling BJP to pull out of the bypoll race to show respect to late Shiv Sena MLA Ramesh Latke, whose death necessitated the byelection.
