The deceased was identified as Chhotelal Karmali (32), a resident of Kuju colliery. Officers of Kuju Police and CCL Security Department reached the spot upon getting the information. An attempt was made to evacuate the deceased from the illegal mine but due to a gas leak in the mine, people at the local level failed to do so.

Afterwards, a rescue team was called from Naisarai of CCL which entered the mine with oxygen cylinders. After much effort, the dead body was pulled out. Later, the body was sent to Ramgarh Sadar Hospital for postmortem.

Kuju OP in-charge Dhananjay Prasad said, “Chhotelal Karmali died not due to mine collapse but due to gas leak.  According to the villagers, he used to do the work of cutting coal along with selling chicken. Doctors at the hospital confirmed his death.”
