New Delhi, Oct 15: India has fallen from 101st to 107th place out of 121 nations in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) for 2022, behind its neighbours Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal. The report, prepared jointly by Irish aid agency Concern Worldwide and German organisation Welt Hunger Hilfe, said the level of hunger in India is ‘serious’.
According to the website of the Global Hunger Index, which records hunger and malnutrition, 17 nations, including China, Turkey, and Kuwait, shared the top spot with a GHI score of less than five.
Bangladesh, which dropped eight positions to take 84th place out of 121 countries in the GHI, had made significant progress since taking 76th place the year before. Nearly all of the neighbouring nations have prospered.
Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Myanmar have been ranked 99, 64, 84, 81, and 71 respectively.
The scandal of rising hunger in too many nations is reflected in the 2022 Global Hunger Index, as is the shifting trajectory in nations where decades of progress in eradicating hunger are being lost. The values of four component indicators—undernourishment, child stunting, child wasting, and child mortality—are used to calculate GHI scores.

Meanwhile, citing the report, Congress MP P Chidambaram said our score has worsened since 2014 in the eight years of the Narendra Modi-led government.
“When will the Hon’ble PM address real issues like malnutrition, hunger, and stunting and wasting among children?” he asked on Twitter.
Notably, India’s GHI score has decelerated – from 38.8 in 2000 to the range of 28.2 – 29.1 between 2014 and 2022.
