Ranchi, Sept 10: The academic work remained suspended at Doranda College today due to the protest against the criminal assault on college professor Mati-Ur-Reham on the college campus on Thursday by a section of youths marauding the campus of the educational institution with the purpose to harass girl students.

Agitating teaching and non-teaching staff were heard demanding proper security for them in the college, pointing out loopholes in the security of the campus saying electronic surveillance is poor and security guards are not trained enough to handle the trouble mongers polluting the academic atmosphere of the college.

They were heard saying that though the CCTVs are installed on the campus, their digital video recorder can hardly store footage and so it becomes difficult to take action in case of any indiscipline on the college campus, which is in a heart of the city where over 15,000 students are enrolled for education and regular footfall is not less than 3000.

College Principal B P Verma confirmed the suspension of classes when contacted for his comment on the security of college campuses. “Teachers are staging dharna. Your voice is inaudible. Will talk to you later,” Verma said, confirming the agitation of teachers and non-teaching staff in the college.

A police official said the demonstration is uncalled for as police have already taken action after getting complaints from the college.

“Those involved in the assault have been arrested and legal formalities are being taken to send them to jail. When action has already been taken then I don’t think that such demonstration is required,” a police official deputed for maintenance of law and order on the college campus said.

“Those arrested include Danish, Tasleem and Shaheed. Danish is a resident of Dhanbad while the other two are residents of Yunus Chowk,” the police official said.

Another police official said only the police should not be blamed for poor administration.

“College management should also create an academic atmosphere by organising regular classes and appointing a required number of good and influential teachers matching the student strength. Much involvement of police in academic institutions is not good,” the police official said.
