Ranchi, March 15: The Mass Communication and Video Production department of Gossner College on Tuesday witnessed the screening of a documentary film named ‘The Ugly Side of Beauty’ in the presence of the producers of the movie. Professor Anuj Kumar of Mass Com Department honoured producer Deepak Bada on the occasion.
The movie is mostly based on mica mining and depicts the life of the mining workers. The documentary showcases how children get caught in child labor, as well as what kind of troubles they face during mining without any items available for their safety.
The opinion of both the parties has been showcased in this film. The documentary showcases how people raise questions on child labour while, on the other hand, they do not even know whether it is actually child labour or not. Marketing done for this from the ground level to upper levels has been shown in the documentary.
On the other hand, the film also shows how beauty companies earn millions every year by making makeup products from the dug up mica. However, due to no source of income for the labourers, they have to engage in mica mining while risking their lives. Mining labourers say that the forest is their home; however, they have been banned by government officials in several issues.
After watching the documentary, the students answered several questions from filmmaker Deepak Bada related to the documentary and labourers. Bada informed students of all the things that he saw, but could not put in the film along with the facts related to the film. Bada further said that film and activism are not different from each other. Professor Mahima Golden and Professor Anuj Kumar of Mass Com Department were present on the occasion along with students from all semesters.
