Ranchi, March 23: The efficiency of CCTV surveillance has come under the scanner of common men as police failed to find any clue of the murderers seven days after the murder of an elderly lady inside her home in Ashok Nagar in Jharkhand capital.
A section of residents shared the view saying that though the picture of suspects was captured in the digital video recorder of CCTV the police failed to find any clue.
“This reflects the limitation of CCTV in the detection of crime. It is often claimed that the entire city is under CCTV surveillance but so far it appears that surveillance is perfunctory at best as despite no clue could be found seven days after the murder,” a resident of Ashok Nagar said.
A police official admitted the problem saying proper resolution of pictures is required to recognize the face. “Mere installation of CCTV is not sufficient, proper attention is required to be given to the resolution of the camera. Apparently, the face is not clear and thus there is a problem,” the official said.
Contacted officer-in-charge of Argora police station Vinod Kumar he admitted the delay but did not comment on CCTV surveillance.
“We are close to criminals. However, without proper verification it is difficult to give any conclusive statement in the matter,” OC Kumar said.
Another official said: “Apart from CCTV footage police use other ways to nab the criminals. One way is to know the number of mobile phones active at the place of occurrence at the time of the incident and then reach the suspects with the help of mobile numbers. This is being done to crack the woman’s murder case. Several were caught and released. Three are still being questioned in the matter.”
On March 17, Malvika Sinha (70), wife of a retired bank officer Vijay Sinha, was stabbed 11 times to death in posh locality of Jharkhand capital, Ashok Nagar. The criminal had refreshment before they committed the crime finding the mother of three alone in her house in the afternoon.
The incident rocked the city and the Kayastha Mahasabha staged a demonstration against the incident at Albert Ekka Chowk. BJP state president and Rajya Sabha member Deepak Prakash also cornered the state government on the issue saying women in Jharkhand are not safe, neither in forest nor in a posh locality.
