Ranchi, May 11: Though the urban areas have more traffic, it is the rural areas in Ranchi that witnessed more road-mishap related deaths in the starting three months of 2022.

Of the total 120 deaths recorded in the Ranchi district during the three months of 2022 including January, February and March, 96 deaths were reported in the rural areas of the district while 26 deaths were reported in urban areas.

  • In January, of the total 51 deaths, 42 were reported in the rural areas and 9 in the urban areas of the district.
  • In February, of the total 32 deaths, 26 were reported in the rural areas and 6 in the urban areas.
  • In March, of the total 37 deaths, 28 were reported in the rural areas and 9 in the urban areas.

The data from the district transport office reveals that the majority of the accidents took place due to overspeeding.

District Road Safety Manager Jamal A Khan said that there is a lack of awareness in the rural areas of the district. At the same time, vehicles checking also fewer in rural areas due to which people in rural areas tend to violate the rules by not wearing helmets while driving.

“It is majorly seen that maximum accident happen with the two-wheeler vehicles. People themselves should be responsible for their safety on road and they should not wear helmets in fear of getting caught by the policemen,” he added.

DRSM Khan further said, “We have ordered to catch traffic rule violators at different places in the rural areas and provide them helmets with the fine collected from them.”

Appealing to the people he said that traffic rules and helmets are for their own safety. One should ignore it as it can be hazardous to them as well as others also.

An expert said that roads in rural areas are in a bad shape. Besides, there is no law enforcement and medical facilities are also in a bad shape.
