Panchkula, Oct 18: The Special CBI court on Monday sentenced five other convicts, including Dera Sacha Sauda chief Ram Rahim, in the Ranjit Singh murder case. CBI judge Sushil Garg awarded the five convicts, including Ram Rahim, to life imprisonment. A fine of Rs 31 lakh was also imposed on Ram Rahim and Rs 50,000 on the remaining accused.

Ram Rahim, who was convicted in this case on Monday, was produced in front of the court through video conferencing. At the same time, the other 4 convicts were brought to the Panchkula court amidst tight security. During the hearing, public prosecutor HPS Verma demanded capital punishment for the culprits. During this, Ram Rahim said that he is a citizen of this country and he has full faith in the court. Earlier, Ram Rahim had appealed in the court about the social work being done by the dera and his illness.

Notably, on October 12, the CBI court in Panchkula had reserved the verdict after hearing the arguments of both the sides. CBI Judge Sushil Garg had given the date of October 18 after the lawyers of the convicts sought time to read the arguments given by the CBI. On the other hand, due to the verdict in Ranjit murder case on Monday, Panchkula district administration imposed Section 144 in the entire city from morning itself. Policemen were deployed along with ITBP personnel throughout Panchkula. People coming to the city were allowed to proceed only after conducting a thorough search.
