Mumbai: Ratan Tata, the industrialist and philanthropist with an unwavering love for dogs, passed away at 86 in Mumbai on Wednesday. Among those paying their last respects was his beloved dog, Goa, who shared a special bond with Tata. This emotional moment highlights Tata’s deep compassion for stray animals, a cause he championed throughout his life.
Ratan Tata’s connection with Goa has a touching backstory. During a visit to Goa, a stray dog began following him, and moved by the companionship, Tata decided to adopt the dog and bring him to Mumbai. Tata affectionately named the dog Goa, and since then, Goa lived at the historic Bombay House, the Tata Group’s headquarters, where Tata ensured stray dogs were always welcomed.
The caretaker of Goa shared, “Goa has been with us for 11 years. The security guards found him in Goa and brought him back. Ratan Tata loved him dearly.”
Ratan Tata’s affection for dogs went far beyond just Goa. In 2018, Tata missed a prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award ceremony hosted by King Charles III because one of his dogs had fallen ill. This decision epitomised his deep connection to his pets, as Tata once explained, “I can’t leave him and come.”
Commitment to Animal Welfare
Ratan Tata’s love for animals inspired various projects, including the Small Animal Hospital in Mumbai (SAHM), a five-storey facility equipped with advanced medical technology to provide quality care for stray dogs and pets. The hospital can house nearly 200 patients, furthering Tata’s dedication to ensuring the well-being of animals.
His vision for SAHM originally had it located in Navi Mumbai, but Tata relocated it to a central spot, understanding the need for accessible care for pet owners. The hospital, which opened in July 2023, was one of the many ways Tata demonstrated his lifelong commitment to improving the lives of strays.
