Ranchi: The Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) has successfully treated a damaged aortic valve using the TAVI procedure for the first time, marking what is believed to be the first successful TAVI procedure carried out at any government hospital in Jharkhand.
Procedure Led by Dr. Mrinal Kunj, Carried Out by Multidisciplinary Team
The procedure was performed under the leadership of Dr. Mrinal Kunj, Assistant Professor in RIMS’ Department of Cardiology, with coordinated support from the cardiology, cardiac surgery, anaesthesia, cath lab and nursing teams.
A Minimally Invasive Alternative to Open-Heart Surgery
TAVI is a modern, minimally invasive technique in which a damaged aortic valve is replaced with an artificial valve using a catheter, rather than through open-heart surgery, offering a treatment option for certain patients with severe aortic valve disease.
Facility Expected to Benefit Patients Across Jharkhand
With this facility now available at RIMS, patients from Jharkhand and surrounding regions are expected to benefit, reducing the need to travel to major hospitals in other states for heart valve treatment and bringing advanced cardiac care options within the state itself.
Dr. Kunj Calls It a Milestone Achievement for the Department
Dr. Mrinal Kunj described the success of RIMS’ first TAVI procedure as a significant milestone for both the department and the institute, crediting it to strong coordination within the team. He said the goal going forward is to make more advanced cardiac treatment facilities available to patients within Jharkhand itself. He also expressed gratitude to Professor Dr. Hemant Narayan Rai, Head of the Cardiology Department, along with all faculty members and the support team, for their guidance and cooperation during the procedure.
