Ranchi: The Jharkhand High Court disposed of a public interest litigation concerning the regulation of slaughterhouses and meat shops across the state after the government informed the court that it had notified new rules governing their operation.
New Regulation Mandates Compliance with Food Safety and Animal Welfare Norms
During the hearing, the state government told the court that its Urban Development Department had published fresh regulations for meat shops operating across Jharkhand, under which all such establishments will be required to comply with the Food Safety and Standards Regulation, 2011, and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Slaughter House) Rules, 2001.
NOC from Municipal Bodies Made Mandatory
Under the new rules, every meat shop and slaughterhouse will need to obtain a No Objection Certificate from their respective municipal corporation or local body, which will inspect the premises before issuing the NOC. After taking note of the government’s submission, the court disposed of the petition.
PIL Challenged Open Display of Cut Meat
The High Court on Thursday heard the PIL, filed by Shyamanand Pandey, challenging the open display and sale of cut goat meat and chicken at shops across Ranchi and the rest of the state. Advocate Shubham Kataruka represented the petitioner, who had argued in his plea that such open display by meat sellers violated FSSAI rules and regulations, as well as Supreme Court guidelines on the matter.
