New Delhi, Dec 20: A huge row erupted in parliament on Tuesday as the ruling BJP demanded an apology from the Congress for remarks made by party chief Mallikarjun Kharge over his controversial remark.
In his remarks from yesterday, Kharge argued that while the Congress made tremendous sacrifices in the liberation movement, the BJP did not suffer any casualties. Kharge remarked in Rajasthan’s Alwar that the Congress sacrificed its leaders’ lives to secure the nation’s freedom, including Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.
The BJP started the day’s debate in parliament with loud demands for an apology.
“He (Mallikarjun Kharge) should apologise to the BJP, the Parliament and the people of this country who formed the BJP govt with an absolute majority. He (Kharge) gave us a glimpse of his mindset and jealousy,” said Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha, Piyush Goyal.

“Has even your dog at home died for the country? Still, they claim to be patriots and if we say something we are termed as deshdrohi (anti-nationals),” the Congress president had said.
Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar claimed the remark was made outside of parliament as the demand caused a commotion in the House.
“The country’s 135 crore people are watching us. It is possible that someone got carried away and said something outside… You are not children,” he said.
Kharge doubled down on his comments and said: “Those who fought for the country’s independence – you are asking them to apologise?”
