New Delhi, June 24: Russia is currently in trouble as a result of the the formidable mercenary group Wagner’s insurrection. The head of the Wagner paramilitary group claimed that his soldiers had seized control of military facilities in two Russian cities.
Yevgeny Prigozhin, a rebellious Russian mercenary chief, asserted that he had taken control over Rostov-on-Don and Voronezh as part of an effort to unseat the top military officials. His detention has been mandated by Russia, which has described this as an “armed mutiny”.
Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, has issued a warning that individuals who engage in treason or armed insurrection will face “punishment.”
Putin pledged to punish individuals who participated in an armed rebellion harshly. “Any actions that fracture our unity” are “a stab in the back of our country and our people,” he said.
The president called for unity among the soldiers and referred to the events in Rostov as an insurrection.
The long-running dispute over the conflict between Russian mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin and the military’s senior brass in Ukraine is now out in the open.
Wagner fighters had crossed the border from Ukraine into Russia and were ready to “go all the way” against Moscow’s troops after the Kremlin accused them of committing an armed mutiny, according to Reuters.
A private army of mercenaries known as The Wagner Group has been fighting alongside the Russian army’s regular counterpart in Ukraine. A former ally of Putin’s, Prigozhin has been engaged in a heated spat with Moscow in recent months.
