KOLKATA: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has formally charged Sanjoy Roy, a former civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, for the heinous rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The chargesheet will be submitted to a special court in Sealdah today, marking a key development in this high-profile case that has sparked nationwide protests.
The victim, who was on-duty at the hospital, was found dead on August 9. Investigations revealed the horror she endured before her death, leading to public outrage and a court order directing the CBI to take over the probe.
Roy, the prime accused, allegedly committed the crime when the doctor had gone to the seminar room for a break. He was arrested by Kolkata Police shortly after the incident, but responsibility for the case was later transferred to the CBI.
Extensive Investigations
According to CBI officials, statements from around 200 people have been recorded as part of the investigation, with Roy identified as the main accused. The possibility of multiple suspects involved in the crime, potentially indicating a gang rape, is still under investigation, they added.
The case has not only highlighted concerns about the safety of medical professionals but has also led to widespread protests by the doctor’s colleagues, many of whom are currently on a hunger strike demanding justice and improved security measures in hospitals.
The Role of Sandip Ghosh
In a related development, Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, has been arrested by both the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the CBI in connection with financial irregularities and alleged tampering of evidence in the case. Ghosh’s involvement has raised questions about institutional oversight and responsibility at the hospital.
As protests continue, doctors at RG Kar Medical College have called for stricter security protocols in hospitals and immediate action from the authorities to ensure such tragedies do not recur.
