New Delhi, Sept 12: The hearing of a number of petitions challenging the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, was adjourned by the Supreme Court on Monday. The court posted the matter for further hearing on September 19.
At least 220 petitions against the CAA were being heard by a bench consisting of Chief Justice of India UU Lalit and Justice S Ravindra Bhat. On December 18, 2019, the Supreme Court held its initial hearing on the arguments made against the CAA.
Notably on December 11, 2019, the measure was approved by the Parliament, which was followed by demonstrations all around the nation. The CAA came into effect on January 10, 2020.
The Kerala government brought a petition before the Supreme Court in 2020, making it the first state to challenge the CAA. The Supreme Court had already warned the Centre and declined to grant a temporary order suspending the law without first consulting the Centre.
