Ranchi, April 25: The supreme court of India deferred the hearing in a petition demanding the reservation of seats for OBC in the forthcoming Panchayat election in Jharkhand till May 4.
The development took place after the court took up the matter and heard senior advocate Abhijit Mani, appearing on behalf of the petitioner, AJSU MP Chandra Prakash Choudhary.
Earlier, the Jharkhand government filed its reply in the matter in which Pallavi Langar appeared on behalf of the state.
On April 9, the State Election Commission announced that the Panchayat election will be held in the state. Elections are scheduled to be held in four phases on 14th May, 19th May, 24th May and 27th May 2022 for the election of Gram Panchayat Member, Mukhiya, Panchayat Samiti member and Zila Parishad member of three-tier Panchayat bodies under Jharkhand State.
There is no provision of reservation for OBC in the election, though, the Supreme Court had asked the state to give the same after a proper survey. Many states have deferred the election to conduct the survey but Jharkhand did not think it proper to delay the election further citing village interest as the reason.
This has created a controversy and the Supreme Court intervened in the matter.
