New Delhi, July 10: The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the Centre asking for its position on a plea brought by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Delhi government challenging the ordinance controlling services in the city.
The central government was given notice on Monday by a bench that included Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices P S Narasimha.
The court further instructed the Delhi government’s representative, senior attorney Abhishek Singhvi, to revise their plea and include the Lieutenant Governor as a party to the case.
The AAP administration claimed in its argument that it was a “unconstitutional exercise of executive fiat” that sought to “override” the Supreme Court and the fundamental principles of the Constitution.
The Delhi government has asked for both a temporary stay of the ordinance as well as its cancellation.
400 specialists who were employed by the Delhi government were terminated from service, but Abhishek Singhvi, who was arguing on behalf of the Delhi government, also requested a stay of that action.
The Solicitor General responded to that by saying that only AAP party workers and MLA spouses were hired for the positions.
In relation to the dismissal of 437 consultants, the Supreme Court stated that it will give the Centre time to respond.
The matter will be heard on July 17th, the following Monday.
