New Delhi, Oct 15: The coronation of Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati as the next Shankaracharya of the Jyotish Peeth in Uttarakhand has been stopped by the Supreme Court.
A bench of Justices B R Gavai and B V Nagarathna passed the order after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the bench about the affidavit filed by the Shankaracharya of Govardhan Math in Puri which says the appointment of Avimukteshwaranand as the new Shankaracharya of the Jyotish Peeth has not been endorsed.
“This application is allowed in terms of prayer clause,” the bench said.
The Supreme Court was hearing a case in which it was alleged that Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati had stated fraudulently that Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati, the late Shankaracharya, had designated him as the new Shankaracharya of Jyotish Peeth.
According to the plea, there is a deliberate attempt to make sure that the court’s procedures are moot and that someone who is not qualified, eligible, or authorised obtains the position.
According to Hindu scholars, a peeth can’t remain without a Shankaracharya.
