New Delhi, Sept 27: The Supreme Court tagged a plea from a lawyer based in Delhi on Wednesday, which called for the filing of an FIR against Tamil Nadu Minister and DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin, and Member of Parliament A Raja. This request was related to their statements advocating the elimination of ‘Sanatan Dharma,’ and it was consolidated with another similar pending petition.
Justice Aniruddha Bose, leading the bench, did not issue a notice regarding the plea. Instead, the bench tagged it with a comparable petition filed by a lawyer from Chennai, for which the Supreme Court had issued a notice last week.
The Additional Advocate General of the Tamil Nadu government objected to the plea, asserting that these petitions are a form of ‘publicity-driven litigation.’
It is extremely challenging for the State because there are 40 writ petitions for publicity that have been filed in various High Courts across the nation.
“Everyone filing PILs for publicity, they will go to the media and circulate these,” the bench said.
The bench stated that the plea would not be given notice and be included in the ongoing petition. “We have not issued notice. Let it be tagged. We will see on that day,” the bench said.
The Supreme Court was hearing an application in which attorney Vineet Jindal sought to hold Delhi and Chennai police in contempt of court for failing to file suo motu FIRs for hate speech in accordance with an earlier order from the Supreme Court.
