New Delhi, July 7: Supreme Court on Thursday agreed to hear Alt News co-founder Mohammad Zubair’s petition tomorrow.
Zubair has challenged Allahabad High Court’s order refusing to quash FIR registered for a tweet in which he allegedly called Hindu seers- as ‘Hate mongers’.
The top court was informed by senior advocate Colin Gonsalves that Mohammed Zubair is receiving death threats and is concerned for his personal safety. He pleaded with the judge to quickly hear his bail application.
The Supreme Court announced that it will hear the case tomorrow (July 8).
Notably, Zubair was arrested on June 27 for allegedly hurting religious sentiments and promoting enmity. According to the Delhi Police First Information Report (FIR), Zubair was detained for a 2018 tweet that was ‘extremely offensive and more than sufficient to provoke feelings of hatred’ among people.
The FIR was lodged against Zubair under IPC section 295A (deliberate and malicious act intended to outrage religious feelings) and section 67 of the IT Act here on a complaint by a Hindu group. The court sent Zubair to 14 days’ judicial custody in the case.
