New Delhi, July 13: Subramanian Swamy, the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), filed a petition on Wednesday asking the Supreme Court to order the Centre to designate ‘Ram Setu’ as a national heritage monument. The petition was set for hearing on July 26.
After Swamy requested an early hearing of the matter, a bench presided over by Chief Justice NV Ramana said that it will hear the plea on July 26.
The panel set the matter for hearing on July 26 after Swamy argued that it had been lingering for a while and called for an urgent hearing.
The bench also sought information on the position taken by the Indian government on the subject. According to Swamy, the government has submitted an affidavit on the subject.
The Centre has acknowledged the existence of ‘Ram Setu,’ according to Swamy, who also claimed to have won the first round of the legal battle. He added that the concerned union minister had called a meeting in 2017 to discuss his demand that the Setu be designated as a national heritage monument, but nothing happened after that.
Between Mannar Island, off the north-western coast of Sri Lanka, and Pamban Island, also known as Rameswaram Island, off the south-eastern coast of Tamil Nadu, there is a group of limestone shoals known as Ram Setu.
