Dhanbad July 31: Dr Sanjay Kumar Sinha, the senior most professor in (medicine) medical colleges of the state retired after 40 years of service in general health as well as medical education today at Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) Hazaribag.
Besides the Head of the Department (HoD), Prof (Dr) Sinha also served SBMCH Hazaribagh as superintendent.
Dr Sinha, one of the senior-most professors in the then Patliputra Medical College Hospital (PMCH) Dhanbad, now Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital, was transferred to the newly set up SBMCH Hazaribagh as HoD medicine on August 3, 2019.
He was appointed superintendent of the college hospital in 2020.
Dr Sinha joined PMCH Dhanbad in 1997 and became an associate professor in 2007 and a professor in 2013. In 2017, when Prof ( Dr) Vijay Shankar retired, Dr Sanjay Kumar Sinha became HoD of the medicine department.
Dr Sinha is one of the rare doctors of the state who had the distinction of serving more than 40 years.
He completed his MBBS from Rajendra Medical College Hospital (now Rajendra Institute of Medical Science i.e. RIMS) Ranchi in 1981 and his MD in 1985. Before it, Dr Sinha joined the health department of the Bihar government in 1983. After serving 14 years in general health, he joined PMCH Dhanbad in 1997.
Dr Sinha was famous for his punctuality in the hospital as well as in college. He was seen in the hospital one minute before the scheduled time (9 am) and left the hospital exactly at 1 pm.
Whenever the then Medical Council of India (MCI) made a sudden inspection of the hospital (PMCH) Dr Sinha was found attending the OPD. But at the same time, he also did not wait more than duty hour if an emergency case or meeting of the college/hospital was not scheduled.
Even if the Health Minister, Principal Secretary of Health or other officials of the government were in the hospital, Dr Sinha did not wait for them after duty hours.
“He was not only the senior most professor but also a good administrator. Dialysis, CCU, Genetics ward and others were set up at PMCH under his guidance,” said former principal and superintendent of PMCH Dr Kameshwar Biswas.
In his 26 years of teaching line, Dr Sinha considers his days in PMCH his golden period of life. “SBMCH Hazaribag College does not has its own hospital. It is Sadar Hospital where I was not able to improve the health service,” he said.
