New Delhi: In a major blow to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), seven sitting MLAs have resigned just five days ahead of the Delhi Assembly election, expressing their disillusionment with the party’s leadership and direction.
The leaders who resigned include Naresh Yadav (Mehrauli), Rohit Kumar (Trilokpuri), Rajesh Rishi (Janakpuri), Madan Lal (Kasturba Nagar), Pawan Sharma (Adarsh Nagar), Bhawna Goud (Palam), and BS Joon (Bijwasan).Notably, none of them were given party tickets to contest the upcoming election scheduled for February 5.
“Lost Faith In You, Kejriwal” – Bhawna Goud’s Resignation
In a scathing resignation letter, Palam MLA Bhawna Goud directed her disappointment toward AAP Chief Arvind Kejriwal, stating, “I have lost faith in you.” Her departure underscores the growing internal dissatisfaction within the party ranks.
Naresh Yadav’s Conviction And Resignation
Naresh Yadav, the former Mehrauli MLA, was convicted in a Quran desecration case by a Punjab court in December and sentenced to two years in jail. Subsequently, AAP replaced him with Mahender Chaudhary as its candidate for the upcoming election. In his resignation letter, Yadav accused AAP of abandoning its core principle of honest politics, stating that the party had become “entangled in corruption”, referring to the Delhi liquor policy case, in which Arvind Kejriwal and former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia were jailed.
Trilokpuri MLA Slams AAP’s Broken Promises
Rohit Kumar Mehraulia, the Trilokpuri MLA, expressed his disappointment over AAP’s failure to uplift Dalit and Valmiki communities. He alleged that the party had promised permanent employment for contractual workers, but no steps were taken to fulfill this commitment.
Rajesh Rishi’s Allegations Of Nepotism And Corruption
Rajesh Rishi, the outgoing Janakpuri MLA, also resigned, criticizing AAP for drifting away from its founding values. A former Anna Hazare movement supporter, he accused the party of becoming “a cesspit of nepotism and corruption”, contradicting its initial stance on transparency and good governance.
Election Countdown And Political Fallout
With voting set for February 5 and results to be declared on February 8, AAP is facing mounting challenges. The resignations could weaken its electoral prospects, especially with the BJP and Congress aggressively targeting the party over allegations of corruption and internal discord.
As political tensions escalate, it remains to be seen how AAP navigates this crisis and whether these resignations impact voter sentiment in Delhi.
