Patna, Oct 16: Seven people died in an incident of boat capsize that took place at the confluence of the Ganges and one of its tributaries in Bihar, an official said on Sunday.
The boat carrying 10 individuals, all agricultural labourers returning from work, sank late on Saturday near the junction of Ganges and Barandi, according to Ujjain Mishra, District Magistrate (DM) of Katihar.
According to the DM, three people swam to safety while the other seven disappeared. He stated that local divers and NDRF troops assisted in a nightlong search effort that ended with the discovery of their bodies.
In the meantime, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed sorrow over the occurrence and ordered the district administration to provide each member of the deceased’s family an ex-gratia payment of 4 lakh.
