Islamabad, April10: Shehbaz Sharif, the president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), nominated himself for Prime Minister on Sunday, while the former ruling party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), picked Shah Mehmood Qureshi as its candidate.
The decision came just hours after Prime Minister Imran Khan was forced to resign following a no-confidence vote in the House of Commons early Sunday morning, making him the first prime minister in Pakistan’s history to be sent home after losing the House’s confidence.
According to the Express Tribune daily, 70-year-old Shehbaz submitted nomination papers for the next leader of the house in accordance with the National Assembly’s deadline.
Shehbaz will get the support of senior PML-N leaders Khawaja Asif and Rana Tanveer. Khan’s party has selected Shah Mehmood Qureshi, a 65-year-old former Foreign Minister, as its candidate for Prime Minister. Aamir Dogar and Ali Muhammad Khan, both PTI leaders, will back the party’s vice-chairman.
The National Assembly Secretariat has already established the deadlines for submitting candidacy papers and scrutinising candidates for prime minister and speaker of the house.
