New Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has sparked a heated debate by questioning whether Delhi should remain India’s capital, given its alarming pollution levels. Labeling the city’s environmental crisis a “nightmare,” Tharoor criticised the government for failing to act, calling it “unconscionable” to let Delhi become one of the most polluted cities globally.
Posting on X, Tharoor highlighted, “Delhi is essentially uninhabitable from November to January and barely liveable the rest of the year. Despite efforts since 2015, no significant changes have been made.”
Delhi’s Alarming AQI Levels
Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) surged to 488 on Tuesday, remaining in the ‘severe plus’ category for days. Residents are struggling with thick smog, dangerously low visibility, and severe health risks, especially for children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing respiratory issues.
The deteriorating air quality has also impacted transportation, with 22 trains delayed and nine rescheduled due to poor visibility. Iconic landmarks, such as Bhikaji Cama Place and Kartavya Path, remain blanketed in smog, while toxic foam continues to float on the Yamuna River, reflecting the environmental degradation.
Drastic Measures in Place
In response to the crisis, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has shifted to online classes until November 22, and schools in Gurugram have suspended physical classes for students up to the 12th standard. The Supreme Court has issued an advisory urging mask usage within its premises to safeguard against pollution-related health issues.
A Call for Accountability
Tharoor urged immediate government action, emphasising the importance of prioritising public health. He questioned the sustainability of Delhi as India’s capital under such dire environmental conditions.
