New Delhi, Nov 7: Sri Lankan batter Danushka Gunathilaka has been given bail while he awaits trial on charges of having sex without consent, according to ESPNcricinfo.
He is also prohibited from accessing his social media accounts. Gunathilaka was detained from the team hotel while on national duty during the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup and charged with four counts of sexual intercourse with no consent.
Gunathilaka has not yet entered a plea to the four counts of having sex without consent. On January 12, the case will go back before the judge.
“Magistrate Janet Wahlquist granted Gunathilaka bail on Thursday in Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court, where he appeared via an audiovisual link from Parklea jail. Police prosecutor Kerry-Ann McKinnon opposed bail on the grounds Gunathilaka is a flight risk and that he could endanger the safety of the complainant, who cannot be identified for legal reasons,” ESPNcricinfo stated.
Gunathilaka has played for Sri Lanka in 47 ODIs, 46 T20Is, and eight Tests since joining the white-ball squad in 2017.
Due to a hamstring injury, Gunathilaka was ruled out of the T20 World Cup on October 19. Nevertheless, he was present with the team as a “standby” when the alleged incident took place.
