New Delhi, Feb 28: Smriti Mandhana, India’s opener has been permitted to participate in the ICC Women’s World Cup after suffering a head injury during the team’s first warm-up match against South Africa. Mandhana was forced to retire hurt after getting struck in the head by a Shabnim Ismail bouncer during India’s first warm-up game, which they won by two runs.
The 25-year-old Mandhana was evaluated by the team doctor following the incident and was first judged fit to continue, according to an ICC report, only to retire hurt an hour later after another assessment.
According to the sources, the left-hander did not exhibit any concussion symptoms at the time, nor did he suffer any long-term repercussions from the collision.
Before the impending 50-over spectacular, the Indian batter appeared in great form while scoring her 20th half-century in her previous ODI against New Zealand. Mandhana has a total of 2461 runs in 64 One-Day Internationals, including four centuries.
Notably, India will play another warm-up match against the West Indies before starting their World Cup campaign on March 6 against Pakistan.
